Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, Tesla, and Twitter as of October 2022, has been vocal about his concerns regarding the development of artificial intelligence and its potential negative impact on society. Despite this, reports suggest that Musk is proceeding with his own plans for AI infrastructure. Business Insider recently reported that Musk has purchased approximately 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) for a new artificial intelligence project at Twitter.
Large-scale AI models often rely on GPUs due to the significant amount of computing power they require. In March 2018, Musk announced that his company would use AI to “detect & highlight manipulation of public opinion” on Twitter. Sources familiar with the matter claim that Musk’s recent GPU purchase signals his commitment to this project. They also revealed that the project involves a sizable language model, although the specific purpose of the generative AI technology on Twitter remains unknown.
