Over 400 Blockchain Games Discontinued Since 2021

A recent report by BlockchainGamer.biz reveals a sobering reality: over 400 out of the 1,318 blockchain-based games announced since 2021 have been discontinued or abandoned. This staggering figure represents a discontinuation rate of over 30%, highlighting the challenges faced by the blockchain gaming sector.

Funding issues and unfavorable market conditions emerged as the primary reasons behind the cancellations. Many of the discontinued projects were smaller initiatives led by inexperienced and under-funded teams, making them more vulnerable to market fluctuations.

A closer look at the latter half of 2023 reveals that multichain games accounted for 17% of the discontinued titles. However, single-chain games were not spared, with BNB Chain, Polygon, Ethereum, Sui, and Solana each witnessing a discontinuation rate of 6%.

The report also highlights the case of Goals, a high-profile game that had raised millions of dollars in funding. Despite this substantial backing, Goals opted to remove blockchain integration from its development plans, signaling a significant shift in its trajectory.

These discontinuations underscore the need for blockchain-based games to address critical challenges, such as attracting a wider audience, enhancing user experience, and establishing sustainable business models. Only by overcoming these hurdles can the blockchain gaming sector realize its full potential.
