Anatoly Aksakov, the head of Russia’s Banking Committee, has raised the intriguing possibility that the digital ruble, Russia’s proposed central bank digital currency (CBDC), could potentially revolutionize the banking sector, making traditional banking institutions less essential.
Speaking at the AiF.Media club, Aksakov highlighted the evolving landscape of financial technology and its potential to reshape the banking industry. However, it’s important to note that there are currently no official plans in Russia to phase out traditional banks.
Aksakov emphasized, “The future of banking could undergo a significant transformation due to the advancement of blockchain technology and central bank digital currencies.” He further added that this transformation could streamline financial transactions, potentially increasing efficiency, once digital rubles are used for lending.
While the Central Bank of Russia has not yet implemented digital ruble loans, Aksakov remains optimistic about this development. He believes that digital ruble transactions could expedite financial processes and make them more efficient.
What’s particularly interesting in Aksakov’s vision is the role of automation. He suggests that as blockchain and digital ruble technology advance, automated systems could play a more prominent role in decision-making processes. This automation could potentially reduce the need for human intervention in financial transactions and, in turn, diminish the relevance of traditional banking institutions.
