Google has recently updated its crypto policy with regard to non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain-based games. Effective from September 15th, Google’s policy now restricts advertisers from promoting gambling-related content.
This update is part of a broader change log by Google, where it outlines plans to update its policy regarding cryptocurrencies and related products in September 2023. The primary focus of this update will be to provide clear guidelines and requirements for advertising blockchain-based games that incorporate NFTs.
Google has clarified that it still allows the promotion of blockchain games that involve NFTs, provided they meet certain criteria. Specifically, games where players can purchase in-game items, such as virtual clothing, weapons, armor, or other items that enhance the gaming experience, are permitted as long as they are certified.
However, Google has drawn a line when it comes to certain types of NFT games. Games where players can bet or stake NFTs to win real-world items of value, excluding NFTs, and social casino games that reward NFTs are not eligible for promotion.
Google’s move to clarify its stance on NFTs and blockchain-based games demonstrates the growing importance of these technologies in the digital landscape. By providing guidelines, Google aims to strike a balance between allowing innovation in the crypto space while safeguarding users from potential risks associated with certain types of crypto-related content.
