Krafton, the renowned South Korean game developer behind PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), is venturing into the metaverse gaming realm with a new product named Overdare, formerly referred to as Project Migaloo. This move aims to compete with the likes of Roblox, a popular user-generated content platform.
Overdare, developed in collaboration with Naver Z, a metaverse subsidiary of South Korean internet conglomerate Naver Corp, will be a mobile-based user-generated content (UGC) platform. It’s poised to challenge games such as The Sandbox and Roblox that are renowned for their building and customization features.
Utilizing Unreal Engine 5 and generative artificial intelligence, Overdare will offer players the ability to personalize their digital avatars and engage in social interactions with friends.
Additionally, reports suggest that Overdare will be built on the Settlus blockchain network. This blockchain integration is expected to establish a “create-to-earn” in-game economy, incorporating support for non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
While neither Krafton nor Naver Z has officially confirmed these details, the Korean Economic Daily reports that more comprehensive information about Overdare is set to be unveiled in December 2023.
It’s worth noting that in March 2022, Krafton struck a partnership with Solana to deploy products on its blockchain network. Although initially part of their plans, Krafton later decided not to utilize Solana for its upcoming Overdare project.
Krafton’s entry into the metaverse gaming arena underscores the growing trend among global gaming companies to explore blockchain and metaverse technologies to create immersive and interactive gaming experiences for players.
