Users of OpenSea, the leading NFT marketplace, have become targets of a new phishing scam promising an exclusive mint event involving Nike and RTFKT, a significant player in the NFT realm.
Among those receiving the deceptive email was MasterJew.eth, a co-founder of the ApeFathersNFT project. Prompted by the fraudulent communication, MasterJew.eth alerted the public via X, urging attention to the issue.
The email, seemingly from OpenSea, featured the subject line: “Exclusive Invitation: RTFKT x Nike Dunk Genesis RBOT CRYPTOKICKS Minting Event!” It falsely asserted that the recipient was one of the fortunate 400 chosen individuals to participate in the launch of a limited NFT collaboration between RTFKT and Nike. The email contained a link to “Mint RTEKT Now,” a potentially malicious website posing a risk of wallet information or fund theft.
Expressing gratitude for the recipient’s supposed involvement in the OpenSea community, the email feigned enthusiasm for the upcoming event. It concluded with a signature claiming affiliation with OpenSea, complete with a copyright notice.
However, the email exhibited several signs indicative of a scam. OpenSea stands as the largest and most utilized NFT marketplace, offering services for buying, selling, and crafting digital collectibles.
To address such phishing attempts, OpenSea users can report these emails to their email service providers or the respective social media platforms. Additionally, users are advised to verify information about minting events or collaborations through OpenSea’s official website for accurate notifications or announcements.
