Samsung Electronics Co. has announced a ban on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including ChatGPT, for its employees. This decision follows an incident where sensitive code was uploaded to the platform by Samsung staff.
The ban encompasses all Samsung-owned devices and internal networks, preventing employees from accessing these AI tools. A report from Bloomberg on May 2 highlighted Samsung’s concerns over the security risks associated with the use of such platforms. The company emphasized the potential vulnerability of data sent to AI platforms, which could be stored on external servers beyond their control for retrieval or erasure.
Furthermore, the internal memo issued by Samsung explicitly instructed employees not to submit any company information when using such tools on personal devices. Failure to comply with this directive may result in disciplinary action, including termination of employment.
Samsung’s decision to implement this ban aligns with the caution exercised by other major companies in relation to emerging AI technology. Earlier this year, firms like JPMorgan, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, and Citigroup, among others, have either restricted or completely prohibited the usage of tools such as ChatGPT.
By taking this precautionary measure, Samsung aims to safeguard sensitive information and maintain control over data security. While the ban may limit the accessibility of generative AI tools for employees, it underscores the company’s commitment to protecting proprietary information and mitigating potential risks associated with these emerging technologies.
