Nigeria, known for its burgeoning interest in blockchain and cryptocurrencies, is still grappling with challenges in public blockchain education, particularly related to language barriers. During the Digital Assets Summit 2023 in Abuja, a panel of local blockchain experts addressed these hurdles under the theme “Web3 Education: Capacity Building.”
Bello Usman Abdullahi, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Bitkova Academy, a blockchain education platform, highlighted the significant obstacle posed by language complexity in teaching blockchain technology. Nigeria boasts over 500 spoken languages, making it one of the world’s most linguistically diverse countries.
To tackle this challenge, local blockchain hubs have started educational initiatives using Nigerian languages to make blockchain and Web3 concepts accessible to individuals unfamiliar with the technology. Abdullahi emphasized the importance of helping newcomers grasp the foundational principles behind blockchain technology, as envisioned by its pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
Despite these education challenges, Nigeria has maintained a strong interest in cryptocurrencies. Google Trends data reveals that the country currently ranks as the world’s second-highest in terms of search interest for Bitcoin (BTC), demonstrating a sustained enthusiasm for cryptocurrencies within the nation.
